Britannia is a society that has specialised in re-creating 5th Century AD in
Britain - what many refer to as the Arthurian period.
Founded by authors Dan & Susanna Shadrake in 1990, the group works at
historical sites for heritage authorities but also has over 40 film and TV
credits to its name, including Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, BBC2's I
Caesar, CH4's Gladiator Girl, First Knight, then as Roman soldiers in the
opening scene of Ridley Scott's Gladiator, their most recently completed
Television work was on the BBC documentary Arthur - King of the Britons
(Televised on Easter Sunday 2002).
Britannia scooped the prestigious 'Military Illustrated's Battle
Re-enactment Society of the year award' in 1998 for their combat display.
In 2000AD The Museum of London asked Britannia to stage what was probably
the first gladiatorial combat at the Guildhall yard on the site of Roman
London's amphitheatre for 1,600 years.
As well as fast and furious combat displays, they also research and portray
living history displays from the episode of Roman occupation.
They have performed at Romano-Britons, and Saxons on the sites of many Saxon
Shore forts including Richborough, Portchester, Burgh Castle and Boulogne.
